9 Tips for Capturing Stunning Wedding Photos
Hey there! We’re Tiffany and Robert, the husband-and-wife team behind Knight Studio, and we love capturing real, emotional, and timeless wedding photos. We know how important your wedding day is—and we also know how fast it flies by. Our job? To make sure your love story is documented in a way that feels authentic, joyful, and stunning.
We’ve been photographing weddings for years, and if there’s one thing we’ve learned, it’s that a little planning (and the right mindset) makes all the difference. So here are 10 tips to help you get the most gorgeous wedding photos ever—without stress, awkward poses, or forced smiles.
1. Schedule an Engagement Session
We can’t stress this enough—engagement sessions are game changers. Not only do you get gorgeous pre-wedding photos, but you also get comfortable in front of the camera before your big day. By the time your wedding rolls around, you’ll already feel like a pro!
2. Plan Your Timeline with Photography in Mind
The best lighting happens during golden hour (right before sunset), so if you can, schedule some couple’s portraits then—it makes a huge difference. Also, factor in enough time for:
✔️ Getting ready photos (we love capturing those quiet, joyful moments)
✔️ A first look (if you’re doing one)
✔️ Relaxed couple’s portraits without feeling rushed
✔️ Candid reception moments (because your grandma’s dance moves deserve a spot in the album!)
💡 Our tip: We’re happy to help with your timeline to make sure there’s plenty of time for all the best shots!
3. Prioritize Good Lighting
Photography is all about lighting! The best getting-ready photos happen near big windows with natural light—trust us, that soft glow is so flattering. For your reception, opt for warm, ambient lighting (fairy lights, candles, or string lights) instead of harsh fluorescents.
4. Consider a First Look (or a First Touch!)
A first look can be so special. It gives you a quiet, intimate moment together before the ceremony—and from a photography perspective, it allows us to capture raw, emotional reactions up close. Not into a first look? A “first touch” (where you hold hands around a door or stand back-to-back) is just as sweet!
💡 Our tip: Doing a first look also gives you more time for photos before the ceremony, so you can spend more time celebrating afterward!
5. Assign a ‘Photo Helper’ for Family Portraits
Family photos can get chaotic if no one knows where to be. We recommend assigning a trusted family member, friend, sibling, or bridesmaid to help round up the right people—this saves time and keeps things stress-free! We have a family list and Tiffany will call out names. But be sure to let your VIP family members know the plan during your rehearsal dinner. When it comes to grandparents, they love to head for the reception seats first thing after the ceremony. Sometimes its easier for them to stay in their seat at the ceremony, and we’ll loop back around for the family photos with them.
6. The Best Photos Are the Real Ones
Sure, we’ll grab some classic, posed shots—but the best wedding photos happen when you’re in the moment. The belly laughs, the happy tears, the little glances between you and your partner—those are the memories you’ll treasure forever.
💡 Our tip: Forget the camera is even there. Be present, have fun, and trust us to capture the magic.
7. Practice Posing (But Don’t Overthink It!)
You don’t have to be a model to look amazing in your photos! The trick? Good posture (stand tall, relax your shoulders) and natural movement.
✔️ Instead of stiffly posing, interact with your partner—hold hands, whisper something funny, or sway together.
✔️ A slight body angle (instead of standing straight at the camera) is always flattering.
💡 Our tip: If you feel awkward, we’ll guide you into natural, easy poses—so don’t stress!
8. Take 10 Minutes Alone During Golden Hour
Even if you take couple’s portraits earlier, sneaking away for 10 minutes at sunset is so worth it. Not only do you get that dreamy, golden lighting, but it’s also a quiet, intimate moment just for you two before the party starts again.
💡 Our tip: These often end up being our couples’ favorite photos of the day!
9. Trust Us & Enjoy Your Day!
The secret to incredible wedding photos? A happy, relaxed couple. Don’t stress over every detail—just be in the moment, enjoy your new spouse, and trust us to document every beautiful second.
At the end of the day, your wedding is about love, laughter, and celebration—and when you’re having fun, it shows in every single shot.
